Archos Prepares Affordable Android Handset with Convincing Specifications
Mar 21, 2016 11:54 AM –
Small manufacturers don’t compete with the big names anymore. They know perfectly well that when it comes to flagships, they have no chance to make the headlines. But taking a look at the affordable handset market, you’ll see that there are several smaller players, constantly releasing their new models at amazing prices. Today I’ll take a look at a new handset from French manufacturer Archos, called 50d Oxygen, which becomes available this May.
The handset’s specifications are impressive for such an affordable price. The phone has a 5″ Full HD (1920×1080) IPS display with a pixel density of 440.51 PPI. Its processing power will be assured by an octa-core MediaTek MTK6753 chipset running at 1.3 GHz, along with a Mali T720 M3 GPU running at 450MHz. Add 2GB RAM to the mix, and you have a phone that will be great for playing Red Flush mobile casino games, as well as more demanding titles with ease.
The phone will be able to work with two SIM cards, and capable of 4G LTE connectivity. Besides, it will come equipped with everything a modern smartphone needs: Bluetooth 4.0, Wi-Fi, Wi-Fi Direct and GPS. It will have 16GB of storage built into it, which can be expanded through a microSD card (up to 32GB).
Camera-wise, the phone will be equipped acceptably: it will have a 13MP autofocus rear camera with LED flash, as well as a 5MP front facing camera for selfies and video chat. All this will be backed by a 2100mAh battery.
The Archos 50d Oxygen will have a “sleek, yet functional and modern” design. Its measurements are impressive – it’s only 8.2 millimeters thick, which makes it fit into the “ultra slim” category. With its 141.4 by 70.8 millimeter dimensions, its weight is just 140 grams.
The handset will run Android 5.1 Lollipop upon release, with no word about a possible upgrade to Android 6.0 once it’s released.
Price and availability
All this impressive hardware will be available to end users for a surprisingly low price: $149.99 (or £129 in the UK). The phone was presented to the world at this year’s Mobile World Congress in Barcelona, between the 22nd and 25th of February. It will start shipping this May.
Archos was for a long time a leading manufacturer of portable video and audio players, before shifting its focus to Android and Windows Phone powered smartphones and tablets. It is best known for the fact that it was the first company ever to release an Android powered tablet computer, the Archos 5, with a 5″ screen.
At last year’s MWC, Archos has launched four smartphones and three new tablets. Let’s see what else they have up their sleeves aside from the 50d Oxygen this year.
