This game is no longer available in Google Play.
Countdown Game for Android is a mobile version of the popular UK (and elsewhere) game show which is essentially a word and maths game. The app features all of the round types: words, numbers and conundrum, giving you a good feel for playing the actual game. If you’re a fan of the program or just love word and anagram puzzles, this is definitely something you should check out.
Tested on: Nexus 4
Pros & Cons:
- Replicates a solo mode of the game as played on TV!
- Easy to play!
- Highly addictive!
- Useful help section!
- One player mode only.
- No letter control.
Countdown Game for Android is a highly challenging word and maths game. It’s based on a long running TV program here in the UK called Countdown and is played out over a number of rounds. Mostly, you have to select 9 letters (from piles of consonants and vowels.) When all are selected, you have 30 seconds to create the longest valid word you can. The longer the word, the more points you earn.
Then there are the number rounds. Here, you select between large (25, 50, 75 and 100) numbers and small (1-9) numbers. You choose 6 in total- for example, 1 large and 5 small before pressing a red button which randomly generates a target figure. You then have the customary 30 seconds to use the number to reach the target. The closer you get, the more points you earn.
Finally, there is a conundrum round which gives you a 9 letter anagram which you then have to convert into a proper word. Previously these words have been randomly picked from the dictionary, often meaning the words were incredibly difficult to pick out (add to this that in the TV show there is a cryptic clue which isn’t available in the app).
The game is lots of fun and yet incredibly challenging. If you’re familiar with the TV program, the elements (and potential) is clearly there for this to be a superb little app. However, there are a couple of little frustrating blips to gameplay which need to be rectified. Firstly, there is only a one player option, which is a shame as the game show is for two players. However I think the most frustrating aspect is the lack of letter control. Currently, you cannot move the letters around to experiment with words- for example like you can in Scrabble. This tends to be quite detrimental to gameplay and can feel frustrating.
I should stress that stability issues, in addition to the ridiculously difficult conundrum words are problems that have been rectified by the developer in a recent update, so my hope is that the game will continue to improve. I think the game has lots of potential and could be genuinely epic given a few tweaks.

The game has a very high fun factor- especially if you like anagrams, word games and challenging maths questions.
Highly! Despite the earlier stability problems I found the game had before its update, I still kept on playing. You can choose between full and quick games, meaning it’s a great casual game to play.
Well… to be honest the visuals aren’t great- especially when compared to other word games. That said, everything is clear and straightforward to understand and you can even adjust the size of the font used in the game within the settings menu.
Accelerometer, Vibration & Sound:
The sound consists of a series of bleeps and clicks. Nothing special, but it works fine with the game. Sadly, the iconic countdown sound is missing.
