(Must Play Game) Dumb Ways to Die
Oct 4, 2013 9:18 AM –
Dumb Ways to Die is internet advertising done right. The game is part of a train safety campaign launched by Metro Trains in Australia. The aim to complete mini-games and score as highly as you can. You do have three lives but you need to avoid death for as long as possible to move onto the next level. As you progress, time gets faster and makes it harder to stay alive. If you like cute mini-games and can’t get enough of the video below, definitely give this a look.
Tested on: Nexus 4
Pros & Cons:
- Cute graphics and animations!
- Fun gameplay!
- Hilarious cartoon gore!
- Catchy as hell!
- Gameplay is limited, but this is just an expended safety campaign after all!
Being an idiot around trains has led many a fool to remove himself or herself from the gene pool, usually messily. To combat this, train companies often try adverts that either shock, alarm or express the risks in very grave terms, after all it isn’t nice. Metro Trains of Australia have produced an immensely catchy viral ad to raise train safety awareness and this game; Dumb Ways to Die is a novel addition to the ruthlessly catchy tune and video- see below.
In the game you get three lives. You have to progress and accumulate points by completing levels of mini-games. These consist of various challenges that relate to the video, including removing forms from toasters, keeping an airplane in flight, not hitting a red button, swatting wasps, not opening the door to a psycho and preventing piranhas from attacking your private parts! 😀 Gameplay then comes with a relatively macabre theme and perhaps not for small children, however the cartoon visuals and quirky animations make for something a bit silly and fun rather than scary. Think Itchy& Scratchy rather than a scene from Saw…
As you progress you collect new characters on your menu screen (a train track) and new mini-games are also introduced. When your lives eventually expire you can share your score with friends on your social networks and see if they can beat you. Gameplay is complimented by an 8-bit rendition of the ad music which, to be fair, is insatiably catchy.
I’m always hugely cynical of advertising campaigns and when companies release Android games to promote their cause, it doesn’t always go well. Dumb Ways to Die is a very simple game by all respects, it’s definitely not something you’ll play for long but if the message sticks with you – the dumbest way to die is being hit by a train while not being careful, so be careful around trains– then it will be more than worth it.
The game is undeniably cute, funny, addictive and enjoyable to play, so be sure to give it a look.

Initially you die… often. However, once you begin to master the mini-game controls your score will improve and become worthy of sharing. Remember too, each time you share the game score, it highlights train safety, so it’s all for a good cause.
Gameplay is often quite tense, especially considering you never really know what mini-game will come next so, while it’s addictive, your nerves might not be able to handle lengthy periods of play. Ideal for casual gamers though.
The graphics are well designed and reflect the viral music video well. Gore occurs throughout but it is very mild and silly. That said, it’s probably a bit startling for younger children. My 8 year old found it hilarious however…
Accelerometer, Vibration & Sound:
The music is a retro version of the main theme tune/ad. It would probably make a good ringtone.
