Glovebox – cool side launcher app brings Ubuntu Touch interface to Android
Mar 27, 2013 10:45 AM –
Glovebox is a stealthy app launcher that essentially hides your most important shortcuts and allows you to access them from anywhere you might be by swiping from the side. Like a smoother and more up to date solution than Wave Launcher, the app offers plenty of customisability and is very easy to use.
Price: Free or ~$3.75 for the premium version
Tested on: Nexus 4
Pros & Cons:
- Easy to use!
- Smooth and accessible!
- Premium version is quite expensive.
- Occasional force closure.
Glovebox is a cool little application that allows you to access your favourite apps, widgets and shortcuts from anywhere with a simple swipe. If you’re playing a game or using another app, you simply swipe your finger from the set position (default is top left of the screen) and the menu is revealed. You then can scroll down and tap the chosen app seamlessly. The app essentially makes switching between apps a far faster and more productive process.
The app is very similar to the Ubuntu Unity dock that you can experience both on your computer or the new Ubuntu for Android solution that is gradually becoming available. If you like that look, it would be simple to use Glovebox and a third party launcher like Apex Launcher to recreate the Ubuntu theme. Talking of themes, the app has the option to select icon sets. Now, at the time of writing this isn’t yet available, but when it launches it will make the app even more customisable.
The free version of Glovebox lets you create 8 different app shortcuts whereas the Premium version also lets you add widgets which kind of quietly overlay whatever app your are in at the time, check out the video below for a demonstration. I think whether or not the Premium version is worth buying is very much up to the user. The full price is just under the $4 mark which is quite pricey for a launcher app.
Glovebox is extremely simple to use and you can do things like rearranging the shortcuts to personalise your experience with the app even more. If you like productivity and like to use your Android device efficiently, this is definitely an app to check out. I think it’s still has some work to be done on it (I’d personally like it to look a little more Holo-themed) but it offers great functionality and has lots of potential.

From skipping to apps quickly or opening your camera app from anywhere you might be efficiently, this is a great app to have. It also speeds up the way you use your device exponentially, great if you like speed.
Ease of Use:
The app is very easy to use and setting up is a doddle. Just click the tab to initiate the launcher, set up your short cuts, reorder them and it’s done! Once set up you can easily tweak elements of the app too.
Once you’ve installed the app and it’s up and running, it’s the kind of application you’d use whenever you use your phone.
The interface is smooth and very reminiscent of the Ubuntu design ethic. I’m not massively convinced it looks all-that-great with a Holo theme but if you’re not that fussy about the aesthetic matching it still looks and works flawlessly.
