Guess The Word – 4 Pics 1 Word. Are you playing this addictive word association phenomenon?!?

Guess The Word – 4 Pics 1 Word (more commonly known as simply ‘4 Pics 1 Word’ and recently renamed ‘Guess The Word – Pics & Words’) is a puzzle game that seems to have the casual-gaming world very excited. Available on both iOS and Android, the game sees you working your way through 150 levels where you have to determine one word from four pictures. It has you thinking carefully about what commonality exists between the images and how to use the letters provided. Some levels are easy, some are quite tricky, but the game itself is both incredibly addictive and wonderfully rewarding.
Price: Free, optional In-app Purchases
Tested on: Nexus 4
Pros & Cons:
- Fun and easy to play!
- Challenging at times, easy at times!
- Simple to play!
- Bit of a current phenomenon; plenty of your friends might already be playing this!
Have you seen this game or seen other people playing it? To begin with, it completely passed me by- usually I recommend apps to family members, not the other way around. It took no time to find the app in the Play Store, despite there being several clones and cheat apps. Essentially you get 150 levels (I know that’s how many there are because I managed to complete them all in a couple of sittings – see Addictive below) in which you view four pictures that share something, you just have to work out what the word is.
For example, you have a gold key in a lock, an iron key in a lock, a laptop keyboard and a close up of piano keys. It’s a three letter word so you can (hopefully) correctly guess the word is ‘key’. As you progress and get words right, you collect coins and these can eventually be exchanged for hints (such as removal of irrelevant letters from the grid or entry of one letter into the word itself. These might be essential if you’re really stuck so use them with caution.
These coins can also be bought via in-app purchases, but I didn’t need to do this but it’s nice to have that option if you’re biting your nails with frustration. The association is right there in front of you, but can you see it? I was slightly disappointed that the game wasn’t harder- it’s not often you can complete a game so quickly but hopefully new levels will be released in future updates. What you tend to find is that you’ll complete 10 levels at a canter, only to be completely stumped by one or two
Because some levels are genuinely mind-numbing, it’s very rewarding when you work it out. The game is quite automated and simple to play- it’s something even children can play. You just have the four pictures, spaces for letters and then a grid of available letters to choose from. It doesn’t require too much ingenuity to actually play, but does require a little lateral thinking to solve some of the puzzles.

There’s definitely something fun about solving these simply presented puzzles. Some are very simple to ‘get’, while others require a little genius to solve. Once you ‘see’ the answer, it suddenly becomes obvious!
Highly! I completed the game in 2 sittings, although it would be quite feasible to do it in just one. The levels fly by and I was left feeling it was a little too short. Hopefully we’ll see more in the future.
The graphics are quite straightforward. The visuals are smoothly designed but are mostly static and low-resolution images. I think, however, that the graphics aren’t really the draw here. They show the pictures well, and it’s an easy game to interact with in terms of entering letters, but this aside, it’s not really anything to write home about.
Accelerometer, Vibration & Sound:
There are little effects that indicate if you have completed a level or got a solution wrong. You can switch this off though on the menu screen- as you flip through the levels it can be a bit repetitive.
