Photomica – photo editing app to insert your pictures in fun & quirky images
Sep 20, 2012 10:59 AM –
Photomica is a photo app that lets you insert a picture of your choice into a variety of quirky frames. For example, you could put yourself into a Wanted poster or on a billboard. If you like playing about with your pictures and want to try something fun, Photomica is a cool app to experiment with.
Tested on: HTC One X
Pros & Cons:
- Plenty of ‘frames’ to try out!
- Take photo or select from gallery!
- Simple to use!
- Images seem really low in resolution.
- Not really anything here for serious Android photographers, it’s more of a novelty app.
- The app watermarks the image with its own logo.
Photomica adds a novel touch to your pictures. First you select an effect. These are essentially elaborate frames which your photo will be inserted into. Then choose an image- either by using one from your gallery or taking one with your camera. You then crop your picture (which is pretty much automated although you can adjust the crop area) and the image is imposed into the effect. You can at that point save and share if you want to. It is mesmerically simple and only takes a few seconds to create these cool effects.
There are a whopping 81 different effects to try out. You can appear in Wanted posters, on billboards, being held up by a dog, even appear on some toilet paper… plus loads more. I did think that the various choices were not particularly good, it’s like they’re just generic stock images with small gaps for your pics. There are plenty of really quite boring effects and the final image resolution isn’t great at all.
I think one of the issues that might kill the app dead as far as potential downloads is concerned is the way it superimposes a logo watermark on the app. On every new image you create there’s a little Photomica logo at the bottom, which just looks incredibly out of place and tacky. Imagine if Instagram started doing that! Photomica is very much a novelty app. It’s fun for a while but there’s certainly nothing of interest here for serious Android snappers. It’s cute, kitsch and simple to use but you’ll probably only ever use it for a short period before the novelty wears off.

It’s not a particularly useful app per se, it does however have a quaint novelty factor that might amuse some people. It has a wide choice of effects to try out and it’s very simple to share with friends.
Ease of Use:
It is probably the easiest and simplest app to use. Just choose an effect, pick a photo, crop and share. It probably couldn’t be much easier if it tried!
This, to be brutally honest, is the kind of app you’d only use a few times before the novelty wears off. There are many effects/frames (call them what you will) but many are not particularly inspiring or original.
The interface is basic but well designed and simple to use. There’s a subtle theme which works well, but it isn’t going to be something you get too excited about.
