Rex: Explore The App Market. Discovering new apps made easy!
Aug 8, 2013 10:16 AM –
Rex: Explore The App Market is a user-friendly and visually intuitive application for scouring the Google Play Store. Many ‘App discovery’ services available tend to just list similar applications, albeit, in a nice user interface. Rex is different however in that it lets you use mind-map-style scrolling through different apps letting you note their relationship. It’s extremely intuitive and a fun way to explore and manage your apps and games.
Tested on: Nexus 4
Pros & Cons:
- Simple and intuitive to use!
- Lots of search options!
- Batch uninstaller!
- Access app information in-app, rather than being escorted back and forth to the Google Play Store!
- Would be nice to have more filtering options.
Rex: Explore The App Market is an app discovery application that provides a highly intuitive and useful interface through which to explore the growing Google Play Store. It comes with a flurry of useful search features and a kind of mind-map/web scroll tool that links apps together to show you why they are being recommended. It’s different, but it works really well and looks great.
The initial screen shows you a list of Must-Have Apps, App Recs for You, Recs for Your Country and Game Recs for you. There are 4 of each and can reflect the apps you already have on your device. A short piece of dialogue gives you the app it is related to. For example, I have Feedly on my phone, so the app suggests RSS Reader and explains that it is related to Feedly, hence the recommendation.
Aside from this front page screen, there is a side panel menu which lists Your apps, Apps, Games, the Uninstaller, Settings and Feedback. Selecting Your Apps, then choosing an app to begin with is a good place to start. Once chosen, the app (already on your device) links to four similar apps, in a mind-map style framework. Simply scroll or select one such app and this replaces the original app in your view, providing a further four apps to peruse. If tapped again, you will enter the chosen apps screen which gives you a load more info about it, in addition to a Google Play Store link. The other side panel menu app options can all be explored in a similar fashion.

There’s a nifty little Uninstaller feature in Rex which is very useful. With apps and games coming and going, the Uninstaller gives you an easier way to manage your downloads. You can easily batch uninstall several apps at a time, which makes using Rex much easier.
There are few filtering options but I think there is room for improvement with them. For example, you can select to only view free applications by ticking that option within the settings. But what if you just want apps under $1, for example. You can select and present apps by trending, quality, popularity and relevance but what if say you only want to view apps over 3.5 stars? The app is extremely good and very easy to use, but I felt it could be improved in this way.

For finding well-hidden gems in an intuitive space, Rex is awesome. Its use however is doubled with the inclusion of a handy Uninstaller. There are a variety of ways to explore, from using your own apps as starting points to discover similar to a straightforward search function for more specific requests.
Ease of Use:
Rex is extremely easy to use and certainly more user-friendly than other apps which merely list applications. I was additionally pleased to see just how much information Rex displays on each app. You have all the info you need plus screenshots etc, so there’s no need to jump straight to the Google Play Store if you do not want to.
This will depend heavily on the user. If for example, an app you use a lot becomes a bit unstable or whatever, you use it to search for similar app(s), all within Rex. I love photography apps (if anything I collect them!) and I like exploring apps which are similar to my personal favourites.
The interface is beautiful and very smooth to use. Featuring the popular slide-out side menu system Google promotes so heavily now, Rex is both good looking and easy to navigate.
