Spout: monochrome mission – play this addictive retro action game
Dec 11, 2013 12:43 PM –
Spout: monochrome mission is a painfully addictive retro action game where you have to navigate a small pixel-craft through an old-school maze of blocks and obstacles. The aim of the game is to get as far as you can. Despite being incredibly simplistic, I’ve found it to be ridiculously addictive and a great casual game to play with for a few minutes at a time.
Tested on: Nexus 4
Pros & Cons:
- Highly addictive!
- Easy to play!
- Nostalgic charm!
- Perhaps too retro for some.
- The HeyZap pop ups are a little annoying.
Retro action game that’ll steal your free time…
Spout is a very retro game. Set to a monochrome backdrop you guide your wiggly craft through a series of never ending building-like obstacles. You control your craft in two ways; left/right direction paddles and a boost button. The boost button shoots out destructive matter that primarily destroys the obstacles. This allows you to fire matter at the obstacles and create a path through. It’s insanely simplistic but very effective for the game mechanics.
The game is most definitely something aimed at people who enjoy retro gaming. Do not expect 3D graphics, well-produced sound or music and do not expect fiendishly challenging levels. Instead, expect a blast from the past in terms of action and gameplay. The graphics and sound are unremarkable but quite faithful to old LCD games. If you like your gaming retro, this is definitely a title you should try.
The further you go, the higher your score. My top score so far is 2800 or so, which would place me at the top of the ‘HeyZap’ leader boards. HeyZap is the third party social gaming platform that, by all accounts isn’t the best-designed service but one a number of games utilise. You see regular pop ups for signing up the service, which I personally tended to avoid as thankfully it’s not compulsory.
My overwhelming impression of Spout though is just how damn addictive it is! It genuinely has that one-more-go factor that is great for casual gamers and those determined to beat their previous scores. I like games that give you an emotional reaction and, despite it’s incredible simplicity in terms of graphics- I was genuinely engaged throughout gameplay. It requires good timing, patience and steady presses to go far, making it very engrossing each time to play.
