THE Football App – ultimate soccer app with updated scores, news, stats & more!
Sep 9, 2013 7:21 AM –
THE Football App is a news and media app that focuses on the beautiful game of football (soccer). It’s fantastically easy to use, following the Holo UI principals very closely. You can view up to date scores, news, videos, images, statistics and even customise the content you are interested in. With many leagues in Europe kicking off a new season recently, it’s a great way to keep up with everything in soccer.
Tested on: Nexus 4
Pros & Cons:
- Looks beautiful!
- Stacked with regularly updated content!
- Customisable; let’s you select a country or tournament to focus on!
- Videos and images, in addition to news stories!
- Push notifications!
- You can’t share stories.
- You are unable to link back to the source- which means external links within the original story cannot be accessed.
THE Football App is a cool and up-to-the-minute news application for football fans. Before I discuss content, however, I have to mention that the app is beautiful to use. Responsive, well designed and intuitive- the developers have followed Holo design guidelines almost to a ‘T’. This makes the app a joy to explore and, considering the volume of news the app holds, this is essential.
So it’s essentially a football, or soccer if you prefer, news application. It includes stories and images in addition to videos. You can follow live games, see news posted in real time and follow specific teams and leagues. The stories are powered by Goal.com, possibly one of the largest football news sources on the Internet, so it’s up to date, timely and includes global coverage from pretty much all corners of the globe.
I thought the inclusion of push notifications was pretty cool. Here, even if you can’t see or listen to a game, you can get notifications as when something happens- right to your phone. Now, plenty of apps do this kind of thing anyway, but it’s great to see user focused features like this included in a pure news application.
Watch on Mobile
One problem I did identify, however, was the inability to share stories. While you can read the news and easily flick through new stories, you cannot share what you have read in the same was that most other news app allow you to. Most notably, Goal.com’s own app allows you to do this.
Another restriction you have lies in the fact that the stories themselves are aggregated and there is no link back to the source. Say within a story there’s a link… there was a story I have recently opened entitled “Watch Ronaldinho score two amazing free-kicks”. When you open this story the video links are actually elsewhere, with the story dialogue merely saying “Click this link…”. However, during aggregation, the links have been removed, rendering the story pretty useless and a tad misleading. Now, this doesn’t occur too frequently, but it can be frustrating.
Overall the app is beautiful, cutsomisable and highly informative, letting you stay up to date with the game regardless of where you live and the teams you are interested in. If you follow football, this is most definitely an application worth checking out.

For staying up to date with all the latest stories, there are few apps with the same coverage. Most obviously the Goal.com app (as info is sourced from the goal.com website) however, I’d argue the UI is better here. The app provides very up to date news, plus push notifications that relate to action taking place in relevant matches. This is how push can be used for good!
Ease of Use:
The app is incredibly simple to use and highly intuitive. Navigation is easy and you can quickly and easily jump to different parts of the app with only a couple of clicks.
It depends on how committed you are to the game, but stories are refreshed all the time, meaning there is always plenty to read.
The UI is really impressive and uses Google’s Holo design principals very closely. This means the app is very easy to use but also intuitive and elegant to look at.
