Chicago-based media giant, Tribune Company, has plans to develop their own Android powered tablet with free subsidized pricing in return for subscriptions to their extended digital version of newspaper content and possibly a wireless-data plan with a partner cellular carrier according to anonymous sources close to the project. Technology in general including devices such as eReaders and tablets devices plus the rising costs of ink have been putting the squeeze on the newspaper vertical; and a move like this could have positive impact on the bankrupt media company. This decision is especially viable at a time when only 8% of America adults own a tablet according to a recent study by Pew Research- which is expected to rise in time. Sources close to the project shared mixed feelings of the outcome of the project. But what are your thoughts… if you are a newspaper reader would you pay a subscription for a digital newspaper if the tablet was free?
