Google Play Movies & TV – great to Watch & Manage Rented or Personal Video Content
Oct 11, 2011 10:09 AM –
Google Play Movies & TV. Official player for the movies you rent from Android Market. Select from thousands of movie titles in Android Market and begin watching instantly — no wires, no syncing, no hassle! Make your movie rentals available for offline use on your supported Android device so you can watch even when you’re not connected. Also get quick access to your personal video collection, including those you’ve taken yourself using your phone or tablet camera.
Tested on: Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1
Pros & Cons:
- A very easy way to view the videos you have saved on your device, as well as rent new ones from the Market.
- Easy-to-use interface.
- Many user experience “Server error has occurred errors” possibly due to older version of the Android Market, Rooted device or non-stock gallery app.
- Better suited for Android Tablets and may not work on all phones.
Videos is Google’s official app for viewing content on your device. It was really built specifically for the videos you can now rent via the Market, and it makes it easy to browse videos and rent directly from the app. However, you can also view your personal videos, and watch them with the same interface as the rented media.
It’s a pretty basic app, and it does what it advertises. I loaded up a full season of a show I wanted to catch up on, and used Videos to watch the whole thing. Your videos show up with the name and a small thumbnail or the cover if you had that associated with the file. To select a video, you just tap on it, and it will bring it to full screen and start playing. The buttons all fade into the background while the video is playing unless you tap the screen, at which point the usual buttons you would expect to find on a video player are there; such as play, pause, fast-forward, rewind, etc.
I must point out the common user frustration of plentiful connection errors and the app simply not working, however, I did not experience this in my case. Many users are receiving this error either due to an older version of Android Market, a rooted device or possibly non-stock gallery app. If these are your cases, I would suggest you not download the app until Google fixes this.

This is a useful app if you rent a lot of movies via the Android Market, or if you put a lot of personal videos to watch on your device, since it makes managing your media very easy.
Ease of Use:
As I mentioned above, this app is all about making it easy to watch videos. There isn’t a lot of extra features or built-in extras, so it does one thing, and does it well.
This depends on how often you watch videos on your device. When I was going through the test, I had it open daily, watching 2-3 videos a day. However, when I’m not actively watching anything, it’s not an app that gets opened very often.
Google has kept the interface clean and easy to use, with a color palette of red and black. Videos are easy to navigate and play, and I liked that all the buttons faded so the video was full-screen without distractions until I tapped the screen to bring them up.
