So, Love, Money, Rock’n’Roll is basically a visual novel where you play as this guy Nikolai, a regular student in Japan whose life gets complicated in a hurry. He’s got this kinda complicated background — his parents came from the Soviet Union, and suddenly he’s caught up in some pretty dramatic stuff that ties into his family’s past and all kinds of twists involving people with way more power than your average high schooler deals with. It’s not just a romance story, either; it feels more layered. There are secrets and some genuine choices to make about trust and loyalty, so it’s less about just picking a girl and more about figuring out who to rely on.
What’s cool is there are four main girls to get to know, and they’re not all the typical visual novel types. There’s Himitsu, who’s been Nikolai’s friend forever and obviously cares about him, but you get the sense things might be more complicated than just friendship. Catherine is the ex who suddenly comes back, which brings up a lot of old drama, and then there’s Ellie, who’s kind of the rich, independent one with a bit of attitude. Kagome is pretty interesting too since she doesn’t seem interested in fitting in at all. Each one has her own story arc and possible endings, so replaying doesn’t feel pointless.
The art’s actually pretty well done — lots of different backgrounds and those big illustrated scenes that pop up during key moments. You get those little sprite animations and animated backgrounds too, which makes it feel more alive than most static visual novels. There’s a surprisingly long soundtrack as well, so the music switches up pretty often instead of looping the same track. They say it’s got over half a million words in the script, and it really does feel like the story goes way deeper than first impressions. If you play it on PC with something like BlueStacks, it feels just as smooth as any other visual novel, and it’s nice having the bigger screen for all the art. Fans of story-focused games where your choices matter and there’s more than one answer to every problem will probably find something to like here.
