In what is essentially a brand new foray for a well-established franchise, Ragnarok Online has ventured out from its usual MMORPG niche and into the strategy RPG genre with the brand new Ragnarok Arena – Monster SRPG. This upcoming game is right around the corner, releasing on December 8, and promises to provide a brand new way to enjoy the iconic MMORPG, this time in the form of a strategy RPG where you can put together teams using characters as well as unlockable monsters.

Everything You Can Expect From the New Ragnarok Arena - Monster SRPG

While Ragnarok is no stranger to getting ported to other platforms, this franchise has, for the most part, remained as an open-world RPG. However, the new Ragnarok Arena – Monster SRPG is doing away with this by turning the game into a strategy RPG where players can go through a variety of levels defeating the enemies within by assembling squads of powerful characters and taking into consideration factors like team synergy, elemental matchups, and keeping a balance of roles and unit types, among others. As such, this game will play more as a gacha RPG than a typical Ragnarok Online title, which is great if you’re a fan of the franchise AND enjoy the typical RPGs that you can usually find on the mobile platform.

With that being said, in this article we will be exploring some of the most important features that we’ll be able to find in the new Ragnarok Arena – Monster SRPG when the game finally releases in a couple of days.

A New Style of Gameplay For the Franchise

In what could be the first time for the franchise, Ragnarok Arena – Monster SRPG will not be an open-world MMORPG, but will instead offer a wide variety of game modes, mostly revolving around engaging and defeating enemy teams in order to progress and obtain great rewards. As such, you’ll need to put together powerful teams that can stand up to any enemy, and then watch them as they engage their opponents until only one team is left standing.

While the combat in this game is mostly automatic, with your units running and engaging the enemy, and then attacking them until either side is defeated, you can also play an active role by choosing when to use their skills. These abilities are often strong and can turn the tide of combat, so proper timing is essential for seizing the victory at all times.

The Popular Class Progression System Makes a Return

For many veterans out there, the most appealing feature in the Ragnarok Online franchise is the class and job progression system. Simply put, players in the previous games start off as Novices, and must transfer their jobs as soon as they reach level 10. This first transition will mark their progression into any of the specialized branches, whether they choose to be a brawny swordsman, a savvy merchant, a powerful mage, or a helpful acolyte, among others. And later on upon reaching another level milestone, players can transition once again into yet another job, reaching the apex of their development before rebirthing and doing it all over from the beginning.

In Ragnarok Arena – Monster SRPG, this job progression system is making a return. However, we don’t know how far or deep it’ll go this time around; we just know that players will be able to access a variety of base jobs, and then progress onto more specialized classes. More specifically, the base jobs available in Ragnarok Arena – Monster SRPG will be the following:

  • Acolyte
  • Archer
  • Mage
  • Merchant
  • Swordsman
  • Thief

With all these options available to us, there’s a little bit of something for all players. And for the aspects that you won’t be able to cover with your job combinations, you can still make up for it by recruiting and adding many different monsters to your squad.

Speaking of which…

Recruit Hundreds of Familiar and Iconic Monsters From the Ragnarok Online Universe

In a brand new aspect introduced in Ragnarok Arena – Monster SRPG, players will be able to assemble their teams not only using human characters and with a wide combination of classes, but also by collecting and deploying hundreds of cute and fearsome monsters, many of which were already present in other Ragnarok games.

Just like with the human characters that can progress and develop into better classes, the monsters that you can unlock in Ragnarok Arena – Monster SRPG can also evolve into bigger and badder forms, and their power will grow alongside their physical changes. In this sense, one of the main premises of the game is just that; collecting monsters and evolving them in order to power up your team, where a lot of the enjoyment comes from actually experimenting with different setups and monster combinations.

AFK Farming Gameplay For Constant Progression

Like with any other mobile gacha RPG out there, Ragnarok Arena – Monster SRPG is loaded with tons of automation features to reduce the grind and help the players focus exclusively on the more entertaining aspects of the game. One of such systems involves an AFK grinding mechanic that lets players continue grinding and farming for resources even while offline. As such, even if you don’t have much time to play, you’ll be able to keep up with other gamers thanks to the resources that your squad will be constantly farming.

A Wide Variety of Game Modes to Keep the Gameplay Fresh

Last but not least, while the main game mode in Ragnarok Arena – Monster SRPG will have you exploring the story and interacting with many different characters, you will also progressively unlock a wide variety of other game modes that will keep things fresh and varied at all times.

Among some of these game modes we find the Geffen Tower climb, the Payon Dungeon, the Artifact Adventure puzzle challenge, and even facing off against powerful world bosses in the Hidden Forest. And this is just a snippet of what’ll be available at launch, and doesn’t include any of the other additions that will probably be implemented in future patches.
