Gear is one of the most important long-term progression systems in Arknights: Endfield, but it is also easy to overinvest in it too early. New players often assume they should craft the highest-rarity equipment available as soon as possible, even when story progression, factory development, weapon upgrades, and resource production would provide greater benefits.

Unlike the equipment systems found in many other gacha RPGs, most Endfield gear is deterministic. Each piece has fixed attributes and bonuses, so you can see exactly what you are crafting before spending materials. The real challenge is deciding which pieces fit your Operators, when to replace lower-tier equipment, and where Artificing and Weapon Essences fit into the larger progression path.

This guide explains how gear crafting works, how to choose equipment for each Operator, and how to avoid wasting Stock Bills and factory resources on upgrades you will soon replace.

How Gear Works in Arknights: Endfield

Each Operator can equip four regular gear pieces: one Armor piece, one pair of Gloves, and two Kit pieces. Gear can belong to a named set or function as an independent piece without a set bonus.

Most gear sets activate their special effect after the Operator equips three matching pieces. Since every Operator has four slots, this usually leaves room for one off-set item. That fourth slot can be used to gain a more useful attribute combination, damage bonus, or utility effect without sacrificing the three-piece set bonus.

Gear is divided into multiple rarity tiers, progressing from basic early-game equipment to Green, Blue, Purple, and Gold pieces. Higher rarities provide stronger base values and more useful bonuses, but they also require increasingly advanced factory components, recipes, and progression milestones.

Every regular gear piece provides a Defense value alongside fixed attributes and an additional combat-related statistic. The exact bonuses do not reroll when you craft another copy of the same item. If a particular piece grants Strength, Will, and Ultimate Gain Efficiency, every base copy of that piece will begin with that same combination.

This makes gear selection more predictable than in games where players repeatedly farm the same equipment and hope for better random substats.

Unlocking Gear Recipes and Templates

Before you can manufacture a specific gear piece, you must first unlock its recipe or template. Early equipment becomes available naturally as you increase your Authority Level and progress through the main story, while more advanced templates are tied to later regions and exploration.

Gear templates can come from several sources. Some are awarded through Authority progression, while others are found in template crates placed throughout the overworld. Later gear recipes may also be purchased through regional Stock Redistribution systems after the relevant outpost upgrades have been completed.

Gold equipment is closely connected to later-game regions and production chains, so simply reaching the level at which Gold gear begins appearing does not mean you are ready to manufacture a full set. You will still need the correct recipes, regional Stock Bills, advanced materials, and the required Operator progression nodes before the equipment can be used effectively.

Players should also research the appropriate Gearing technology in the AIC Factory Plan. This unlocks the facilities and manufacturing recipes needed to produce gear components rather than only giving access to the final assembly menu.

Crafting Gear Through the AIC

Gear is produced through the Automated Industry Complex, or AIC. This means your equipment progression is directly connected to how well your factory processes ore, manufactures components, and stores materials.

blog-image-Arknights-Endfield_Gear-Progression-Crafting_EN_04

The general process begins with gathering or extracting raw resources. These materials are then refined into processed ore products before being sent through a Gearing Unit to create the components required for equipment assembly. Decryption Crystals, which are commonly obtained through combat and exploration, are then combined with those manufactured components to produce the final gear piece.

Higher-rarity gear requires more advanced materials and regional production chains. Blue and Purple equipment can usually be supported by relatively modest factory setups, while Gold gear may require materials exclusive to later regions and a much larger supply of Stock Bills.

Once Gear Assembly is unlocked, it can be accessed while operating inside an AIC Zone. Players can also reach it through the Protosync menu after the relevant feature becomes available. The assembly screen displays the gear recipes you own, the materials required, your current supply, and the number of pieces you want to manufacture.

Because gear crafting does not consume the same daily energy used for certain combat rewards, a strong factory can continue producing equipment materials over time. This makes AIC expansion one of the most important foundations for long-term gear progression.

Understanding Operator Attributes

Every Operator has a Primary Attribute and a Secondary Attribute. These Operator attributes contribute to their Attack scaling while also providing separate defensive or utility benefits:

  • Strength: Increases maximum HP.
  • Agility: Improves physical damage reduction.
  • Intellect: Improve arts damage reduction.
  • Will: Increases treatment received.

An Operator gains more Attack from each point of their Primary Attribute than from their Secondary Attribute. This makes the main attribute an important starting point when evaluating gear, but it should not be treated as the only factor.

Some Operators have skills that interact strongly with their secondary attribute or with a specific combat mechanic. A support-oriented Operator, for example, may gain more practical value from healing, Ultimate generation, or ability-related bonuses than from blindly stacking the largest possible Primary Attribute value.

The best way to evaluate gear is to consider three layers in order:

First, check whether the piece supports the Operator’s preferred attributes. Next, determine whether the set effect benefits the Operator’s actual role. Finally, compare additional bonuses such as Physical Damage, Heat Damage, Combo Skill Damage, Battle Skill Damage, or Ultimate Gain Efficiency.

A high-rarity item with poor attribute alignment can be less useful than a lower-rarity piece designed around the Operator’s kit.

Choosing the Right Set Bonus

Set bonuses should support how an Operator actually deals damage or contributes to the squad.

Physical Operators who frequently stagger enemies may benefit from bonuses related to Physical Damage, Combo Skills, Battle Skills, or attacks against staggered targets. Arts-focused Operators generally want elemental damage bonuses, ability-related effects, or attribute pairings that strengthen their specific damage type.

Ultimate Gain Efficiency is also valuable for Operators whose performance depends on casting their Ultimate frequently. In those cases, an off-set Kit with better energy generation can be more valuable than forcing four matching pieces from the same set.

The fourth gear slot gives players room to solve weaknesses in an otherwise strong build. A three-piece set can provide the central passive, while the remaining slot supplies an attribute combination or utility stat that the set itself lacks.

This is why gearing in Endfield rewards deliberate matching rather than simply equipping four pieces with the highest Defense values.

Weapons and Gear Should Progress Together

Weapons are separate from regular gear, but they are just as important to an Operator’s overall performance. Each Operator is restricted to a particular weapon category, such as a Sword, Greatsword, Polearm, Handcannon, or Arts Unit.

blog-image-Arknights-Endfield_Gear-Progression-Crafting_EN_07

Weapons provide a base Attack value alongside fixed stat bonuses and a passive effect. Some weapons are clearly designed to complement a particular Operator’s kit, but they are not necessarily locked to that character. A so-called signature weapon can still be useful on another Operator if its attributes and passive match their role.

Weapon leveling is one of the safest early investments because it grants consistent Attack without depending on a set bonus or Artificing success. If your team is struggling with damage, improving the primary damage dealer’s weapon can sometimes provide a more immediate benefit than replacing an entire gear set.

Players should therefore avoid treating gear crafting as the only progression system that matters. Operator levels, promotions, skills, weapons, and gear all contribute to combat power, and an imbalance in any one area can slow progress.

Essences Are the Main Source of Weapon RNG

Regular gear and weapon base stats are mostly predictable. Essences are where much of Endfield’s equipment randomness appears.

An Essence can be inserted into a weapon to improve its stat bonuses and passive effect. The ideal Essence normally matches all three parts of the weapon: its attribute bonus, its secondary combat stat, and the named passive category.

blog-image-Arknights-Endfield_Gear-Progression-Crafting_EN_08

For example, a weapon that provides Strength, Attack, and a particular passive ideally wants an Essence containing those same three properties. Matching the Essence correctly allows the weapon to reach much higher bonus levels than leveling and promotion alone.

Essences are obtained from Energy Alluvium Sites, which consume Sanity. Different sites have different drop pools, so players should inspect the available rewards before spending energy. Guarantee or pre-engraving tickets can reduce some of the randomness, but obtaining the exact three-stat combination can still require repeated farming.

Essence improvement introduces another layer of uncertainty because later upgrade attempts may fail. This makes Essences a better target for late-game optimization than for early progression. A functional weapon with the wrong Essence is often still enough for ordinary content, while chasing a perfect roll can consume large amounts of Sanity.

When Gear Actually Starts to Matter

Early enemies usually fall quickly enough that perfect gear is unnecessary. During the first portion of the game, story progression, Operator development, weapons, factory expansion, and access to new systems are generally more important than optimizing every equipment slot.

blog-image-Arknights-Endfield_Gear-Progression-Crafting_EN_09

The first meaningful gear checkpoint is normally the Blue tier. Players should craft at least one Blue set when required by beginner progression objectives, since completing those tasks provides rewards and introduces the full equipment system.

Purple gear becomes worth considering when your team begins failing timed encounters, higher-level farming stages, or difficult bosses. Crafting one well-matched Purple set for your primary damage dealer is not a major long-term mistake, especially if it helps you clear better resource stages consistently.

Gold gear is the real endgame target, but it should not be rushed simply because its recipes become visible. Manufacturing it requires expensive regional materials and Stock Bills, while equipping it may also require high Operator levels and specific progression nodes.

A player with an underdeveloped factory can easily spend most of their resources on one Gold set and then find themselves unable to expand production, purchase rotating materials, or equip the gear immediately. In many cases, improving the factory first creates a faster path to complete endgame builds later.

A Practical Gear Progression Path

During the early game, equip basic pieces with useful attributes and continue advancing the story. Avoid producing several complete Green sets unless your team is genuinely struggling.

Once Blue equipment becomes available, craft the set required for beginner objectives and place it on the Operator who contributes the most damage. Continue upgrading that Operator’s weapon and core abilities alongside the gear.

blog-image-Arknights-Endfield_Gear-Progression-Crafting_EN_10

After reaching more demanding combat stages, assess whether you are actually failing because of equipment. If a timer expires while your team survives comfortably, additional offensive stats from Purple gear may solve the problem. If your team dies quickly, defensive attributes, healing, Tacticals, or better combat execution may matter more.

When later regions and Gold crafting become available, focus first on stabilizing the factory, increasing Stock Bill income, and unlocking the necessary recipes. Then manufacture Gold pieces for the Operators you expect to use for a long time.

Artificing and perfect Essences should come after the basic Gold build is complete. These systems are resource-intensive and provide the most value when applied to equipment that will not be replaced soon.

Gear Artificing Explained

Artificing allows players to improve the fixed bonuses on higher-tier gear. While the original attributes and set effects remain predictable, Artificing introduces a chance-based upgrade system.

To attempt an upgrade, you must sacrifice another gear piece of the same rarity and matching slot type. An Armor piece is used to improve another Armor piece, while Gloves and Kits require their corresponding equipment types. The sacrificed item must also contain the attribute you are trying to improve.

blog-image-Arknights-Endfield_Gear-Progression-Crafting_EN_11

Each attempt additionally consumes a regional Gear Artificing Catalyst. These Catalysts are generally purchased with Stock Bills and may have limited availability in rotating or regional stores.

Success is not guaranteed. Using a sacrifice piece with a stronger version of the desired stat can improve the chance, while failed attempts contribute progress toward a future guaranteed upgrade. Each stat can only be improved a limited number of times.

Because the process consumes Catalysts and duplicate equipment, Artificing should be reserved for pieces you are confident will remain part of the Operator’s final build. Improving temporary Blue or poorly matched Purple gear can delay progress toward a stronger Gold setup.

Do Not Ignore Tacticals

Tacticals occupy a separate consumable slot and are easy to overlook because they do not resemble permanent equipment. However, healing items and other combat consumables can compensate for weak gear during difficult exploration or boss encounters.

blog-image-Arknights-Endfield_Gear-Progression-Crafting_EN_12

A simple healing Tactical may provide more practical survivability than crafting an entirely new defensive set during the early game. They are especially valuable while exploring high-level areas, where scattered attacks and environmental damage can gradually wear down the squad.

Using Tacticals efficiently can delay unnecessary gear spending and help players progress far enough to unlock better crafting systems.

Time-Limited Resources Are Worth Buying Early

Even when you are not ready to use Artificing or perfect an Essence, limited shop materials are often worth purchasing before they reset.

Gear Artificing Catalysts, Essence-related guarantee items, and Operator affinity gifts all contribute to long-term character development. Affinity can improve Operator attributes, Artificing materials support endgame equipment, and Essence tickets reduce future weapon farming frustration.

blog-image-Arknights-Endfield_Gear-Progression-Crafting_EN_13

Buying these materials does not mean they must be used immediately. Holding them until you have chosen a favorite Operator or completed a proper Gold build is often the smarter approach.

Missing one shop rotation will not ruin an account, but regularly ignoring these resources can make late-game optimization slower than necessary.

Common Gear Progression Mistakes

The most expensive mistake is rushing Gold gear before the factory and Operator requirements are ready. High-rarity equipment is not useful if you cannot manufacture the supporting materials or equip it.

Another common problem is choosing gear only by rarity. Always confirm that the attributes and set bonus match the Operator’s scaling and combat role before crafting several copies.

blog-image-Arknights-Endfield_Gear-Progression-Crafting_EN_14

Players also frequently spend Stock Bills on immediate upgrades while ignoring limited Catalysts, Essence vouchers, or regional factory development. A short-term stat increase may feel helpful, but stable production and access to scarce materials create greater value over time.

Artificing temporary equipment is equally wasteful. Since the process consumes limited Catalysts and duplicate pieces, save it for gear that belongs to a serious late-game build.

Finally, do not neglect weapon levels. A strong set of armor cannot fully compensate for an underleveled weapon on your main damage dealer.

Build Gear When It Solves a Real Problem

The best gear progression rule in Arknights: Endfield is to invest with a clear purpose. Before crafting or Artificing an item, ask whether you are actually stuck, whether the upgrade will unlock better farming or story progress, and whether the equipment will remain useful long enough to justify its cost.

Blue gear covers the early progression requirement, Purple gear can bridge difficult midgame encounters, and Gold gear becomes the long-term target once your factory and Operators are ready. By matching attributes, set bonuses, weapons, and Essences to each Operator’s kit, you can build powerful teams without wasting resources on equipment that will quickly be replaced.
