Roblox Grow a Garden Pet Mutations Guide – Best Mutations, Chances & How to Use the Mutation Machine

Pet Mutations are an important part of progression in Grow a Garden. They can change how your pets look, improve their abilities, help them gain experience faster, or give them special effects that can benefit your crops.
With the addition of higher pet levels and new mutation options, there is now more to the system than simply putting an Age 50 pet into the Mutation Machine and hoping for a rare result. Understanding what each mutation does can help you decide which ones are worth keeping and when it is actually worth spending your Sheckles on another attempt.
This guide covers the current Pet Mutation system, Mutation Machine requirements, mutation chances, the best mutations for different purposes, and the newer Level 500 mutation options.
How Pet Mutations Work in Grow a Garden
A Pet Mutation gives your pet a special trait that can affect its appearance, passive ability, experience gain, size, or usefulness in your garden.
Not every mutation is obtained in the same way. The standard Mutation Machine has its own pool of results, while some other mutations can be obtained through events, Mutation Shards, specific pets, or other game mechanics.

It is also important not to confuse Pet Mutations with Crop Mutations. Crop Mutations affect the fruits you grow and can increase their value, whereas Pet Mutations affect the pet itself. Some mutated pets can also interact with crops and help apply specific crop mutations.
In most cases, a pet can only have one standard mutation. Applying another mutation can replace the existing one, so you should be careful before putting an already useful mutated pet back into the machine.
How to Use the Mutation Machine
The standard Mutation Machine can be found near the Egg Shop.
Before you can use it, the pet you want to mutate must reach Age 50. Once the pet becomes eligible, interact with the machine and place the pet inside.
Each attempt costs 500 million Sheckles and takes 60 minutes to complete. Players can also skip the waiting period for 49 Robux.

Once the process is complete, the pet receives its new mutation and its age is reset to 1.
The process works as follows:
- Raise your pet to Age 50.
- Take it to the Mutation Machine.
- Place the eligible pet inside.
- Pay the 500 million Sheckle cost.
- Wait 60 minutes or use the Robux option to skip the timer.
- Collect your mutated pet.
Since the process is expensive and resets the pet’s age, you should avoid repeatedly mutating your strongest pet unless you have a specific goal in mind.
Pet Mutation Chances
The standard Mutation Machine has several possible outcomes, and the chances vary considerably between them.
Shiny has a 32.15% chance of appearing. It provides an additional 15% XP boost, making it a useful result if you are primarily interested in leveling your pets.
Inverted has a 16.08% chance and provides a 30% XP boost. Because of the larger XP bonus, it is generally more useful than Shiny for players focusing on pet progression.
Windy has a 9.65% chance. This mutation gives the pet a chance to apply the Windstruck mutation to nearby fruit, giving it a useful role in crop-mutation farming.

Frozen also has a 9.65% chance and gives the pet a chance to apply the Frozen mutation to nearby fruit.
Tiny has a 6.43% chance and changes the pet’s appearance by making it considerably smaller while providing additional progression benefits.
Mega also has a 6.43% chance. As the name suggests, it makes the pet much larger and provides additional benefits.
Aurora has a 3.22% chance and allows the pet to periodically apply the Aurora mutation to nearby fruit.
Shocked has a 3.22% chance and gives the pet additional utility during Thunderstorms, allowing it to help create Shocked fruit.
Rainbow has a 3.22% chance and is one of the more desirable general-purpose results because it provides a significant improvement to the pet’s passive ability.
Finally, Ascended has only a 0.32% chance, making it an extremely rare standard Mutation Machine result. It allows the pet to periodically apply the Dawnbound mutation to fruit, which makes it particularly valuable for players focused on advanced crop-mutation farming.
These chances apply to the standard machine pool. Some other Pet Mutations available in Grow a Garden come from different sources and should not be treated as regular Mutation Machine results.
What Is the Best Pet Mutation?
There is no single mutation that is best for every pet or every player. The right choice depends on what you want that pet to do.
For general pet performance, Rainbow is one of the strongest results because it improves the pet’s passive ability. This makes it a good option for pets that you plan to keep in your main lineup.
If your priority is leveling pets, Inverted is particularly useful because of its 30% XP boost. Shiny is easier to obtain and still provides a useful 15% XP increase.
Players who focus on crop mutations have different priorities. Windy, Frozen, Shocked, and Aurora can all provide useful crop-related effects, while Ascended is the most desirable standard result for players who specifically want Dawnbound-related utility.
Mega and Tiny are more focused on changing the appearance and size of your pet, making them attractive choices for players who enjoy collecting unusual pet variants.
Level 500 Pet Mutations
Pet progression received another major addition with the Summer Camp Part 3 update. Pets can now be leveled much further, with Level 500 progression opening access to four additional mutation outcomes.
Exalted has a 50% chance and provides a 25% boost to the pet’s passive while also offering additional XP benefits to other pets.
Iridescent has a 35% chance. It significantly increases the pet’s size and allows it to periodically turn a random fruit Rainbow.

Gigantic has a 12.5% chance and greatly increases the pet’s size. It can also periodically provide passive benefits to three random pets.
Transcendent is the rarest of these four results, with a 2.5% chance. It provides a major passive boost and can periodically increase the age of another pet.
These Level 500 mutations add another layer of long-term progression for players who have already invested heavily in their pets.
Best Mutations for Different Goals
Your ideal mutation should match the role you want the pet to perform.
For pet leveling, Inverted is the strongest choice among the standard XP-focused results, while Shiny remains a useful and much more common alternative.
For general passive performance, Rainbow is a strong choice and is usually worth keeping when it appears on a pet you actively use.
For crop-mutation farming, Windy, Frozen, Shocked, and Aurora each provide different types of utility. Ascended is the premium result if your strategy revolves around Dawnbound.
For players who care about appearance, Mega and Tiny offer noticeably different pet sizes, while Iridescent and Gigantic provide additional options once you reach the higher-level progression.
Should You Reroll a Pet Mutation?
Rerolling should not be something you do casually.
Every standard attempt costs 500 million Sheckles, takes an hour, and resets your pet’s age to 1. You also risk replacing a mutation that may already be useful.
For example, if you receive Rainbow on a pet that you regularly use for its passive ability, repeatedly rerolling it just to chase Ascended may not be worth the cost.
A better approach is to decide what you want from the pet before starting the mutation process. If you are building a crop-mutation setup, look for mutations that support that purpose. If you are trying to level several pets, XP-focused mutations are more useful.
Using duplicate or replaceable pets for experimentation is also safer than risking the only copy of an important pet.
What About Mutation Shards?
The Mutation Machine is not the only way to obtain Pet Mutations.
Mutation Shards, events, specific pets, and other game mechanics can provide additional mutations that are not necessarily part of the standard machine pool.

This is worth remembering when looking at older Grow a Garden guides. The game receives frequent updates, and a list of every Pet Mutation in the game does not necessarily mean that every mutation can currently be obtained through the normal Mutation Machine.
Final Verdict
Pet Mutations can make a noticeable difference to how effectively your pets perform in Grow a Garden. The standard Mutation Machine requires an Age 50 pet, costs 500 million Sheckles, and takes 60 minutes to complete.
For most players, the best mutation depends on the role of the pet. Inverted and Shiny are useful for gaining XP, Rainbow is a strong general-purpose choice, and Windy, Frozen, Shocked, and Aurora are useful for players interested in crop mutations. Ascended is particularly valuable but extremely difficult to obtain because of its low chance.
The newer Level 500 system adds Exalted, Iridescent, Gigantic, and Transcendent, giving experienced players additional goals as they continue leveling their pets.
Most importantly, don’t reroll just because a mutation is not rare. Consider the ability it provides and whether it fits your current garden strategy. Spending 500 million Sheckles on a mutation that you actually need is far more valuable than endlessly chasing a result simply because it has a lower drop rate.
