Why limit yourself to your small screen on the phone? Run Chinese Numbers, an app by Chinesimple, best experienced on your PC or Mac with BlueStacks, the world’s #1 Android emulator.
Chinese Numbers keeps things very focused. It is all about learning numbers the way they actually show up: quantities, distances, hours, money, time, and a few other everyday units. The app has a compact dictionary of around ninety two number words, with both Simplified and Traditional characters, tone colors, and stroke order, so someone can see how each one is written and sounds. There are short lessons in English, plus about fifty seven sample sentences and expressions that show how numbers fit into real phrases, so it feels practical instead of academic.
What makes it stick are the activities. There are seven little games, more than five hundred bite size challenges, and a bunch of achievements to chase, so practice does not get boring. Audio is recorded by a native speaker, and the app lets the user record their own voice to compare. Voice recognition is built in too, though that needs an internet connection. Search works by meaning, hanzi, or pinyin, and there is a starred list to save tricky words. The stats page is surprisingly detailed, tracking progress over time and highlighting mistakes, which helps figure out what to review next.
On a PC with BlueStacks, writing practice and stroke order are easier to see, and the listening bits feel clearer on bigger speakers. The interface is available in several languages, so navigation is simple even if someone is just starting Chinese. Just note this is the lite version, so content is trimmed compared to the full one.
