This Identity V hunter guide is designed to sharpen your instincts, from choosing the perfect traits to mastering the final moments of a match. Utilizing the strategies in this guide will ensure your manor remains a house of no escape. Let’s begin!
Who are Hunters in Identity V?
Hunters are playable characters in Identity V. There are 2 roles in the game – Survivor and Hunter. As the name might suggest, Hunters need to catch survivors before they can escape. As a hunter, your primary focus is keeping the pressure high and the progress low. You are the gatekeeper of the manor, and your success depends on how well you can multitask. You need to keep survivors off their ciphers while simultaneously securing downs. Every moment you spend in a chase that leads nowhere is a moment they spend decoding. Efficiency is the name of the game.

Choosing a Trait as Hunters in Identity V
Choosing your active trait is your first tactical decision. Depending on the survivors you see in the lobby, you can swap your trait to counter their specific strengths.

- Listen: This is a classic choice for beginners or when facing stealthy teams. It helps pinpoint survivors who are moving or decoding, though experienced players may know how to crouch and avoid detection.
- Blink: Often considered the strongest trait in high-tier play. It allows you to teleport a short distance instantly, usually through a wall or pallet, to land a hit on a survivor who thought they were safe.
- Patroller: This is your best tool against high-mobility survivors like the Forward or Mercenary. Once the Patroller bites them, they are slowed down every five seconds, making it much easier to close the distance.
- Excitement: This is a must-have when facing teams with heavy stunners like the Coordinator, Batter, or Enchantress. It grants you immunity to stuns for a few seconds, allowing you to secure a chair even under fire.
- Teleport: Essential for map control. It allows you to jump to a cipher machine or an exit gate instantly. This is particularly useful if you see a machine shaking, indicating someone is working on it.
- Abnormal: If the survivors are decoding too fast, Abnormal lets you reset a significant portion of a cipher’s progress. It is a great way to drag the game out and buy yourself more time.
Detecting Survivors as a Hunter in Identity V
Understanding where the survivors are without seeing them is what separates a novice from a master. At the start of the match, look at the cipher machine outlines. You should generally head toward the ciphers that are furthest from your spawn point, as survivors often spawn on the opposite side of the map.
One of the most important tools in your arsenal is the Tinnitus talent. When this is active, a small ear icon appears on your UI if a survivor is within 36 meters. If you see this icon near a cipher machine, someone is nearby. Look for moving grass, the sound of decoding, or the red scratch marks left behind by a running survivor.
A pro tip for detection is the three-gen strategy. Try to identify three cipher machines that are close to one another. If you can force the survivors to leave those three for last, you will have a much easier time patrolling them and preventing the final pop.
It’s Time to Catch those Survivors!
The chase is where the tension peaks when playing as a Hunter in Identity V. The most important rule is to not tunnel a single survivor for too long. If you haven’t landed a hit within 60 seconds, it might be time to abandon that chase and find a more vulnerable target.

Try to herd survivors toward dead zones or the basement. The basement is the most dangerous place for a survivor because it has only one exit and no pallets. If you can down someone near the basement, your chances of a successful elimination skyrocket. Additionally, if you chase near active ciphers, your heartbeat will force other survivors to stop decoding and hide, slowing down their overall progress.
Filling Up Chairs with Survivors
Once you have a survivor on your shoulder, you need to be decisive. If there is a Gardener on the team, she will likely try to sabotage your chairs. If you find yourself in an area with no working chairs, you may need to fix one or drop the survivor and bleed them out while you find a nearby alternative. Your target priority is also key. If you see a Mind’s Eye, prioritize her. She is the fastest decoder in the game and can end the match before you even secure your first elimination. On the other hand, someone like a Mercenary is designed to take hits and waste your time, so only chase him if he is out of position.

When a survivor is on the chair, the rescue attempt is inevitable. You need to decide whether to camp the chair or patrol nearby ciphers. If you stay at the chair, look for the rescuer. Using the Tinnitus icon can help you tell if someone is lurking in the bushes. If you are at the chair when a rescuer arrives, try to hit them while they are interacting with the chair. This results in a Terror Shock, which instantly downs the rescuer. If the rescue is successful, focus your next hit on the survivor who was just on the chair. They are already wounded and will be eliminated much faster than a fresh survivor.
