The Hydra punishes teams that treat it like a normal Clan Boss. Six heads, a devouring mechanic that can permanently kill your Champions, and a Champion lock that stops you reusing your best units make it the trickiest fight in the game. This RAID: Shadow Legends Hydra guide covers every head, the mechanics behind them, and how to build teams that actually survive.

What Is the Hydra Clan Boss?

The Hydra is a Clan Boss available only to Clan members, and it unlocks at Level 45. You will find it on the Clan Bosses Map under the Clan Bosses game mode.

Like the Demon Lord, this is a survival fight rather than a race to kill. You bring 6 Champions instead of the usual 4, and you face 4 Hydra heads at once. Your damage is pooled with every other Clan member’s damage to wear down the boss over the week. If you’re still working your way up through the earlier difficulties, check out this Clan Boss Progression Guide covering the full climb from Easy to Ultra-Nightmare.

One rule shapes everything about how you approach this boss. Each Champion can only be used in one Hydra battle per week, so you cannot bring your best team three times. Mastering the Hydra means building three separate teams from across your entire Collection, which is why it is considered a late game roster check rather than a gear check alone.

Hydra Chests are also the only source of Stone Skin and Protection Artifact Sets, both of which are Variable Sets available in Mythical rarity, and the fight awards fragments toward the Legendary Champion Mithrala Lifebane.

Understanding the Six Hydra Heads

The Hydra has 6 heads in total, but only 4 fight you at a time. Every month, 4 heads are chosen as Starter Heads and the remaining 2 wait as Substitutes. Each head is also assigned an affinity for that rotation, and both the lineup and affinities stay fixed for the whole month.

Every head shares a set of common passives worth knowing before you build. All heads are immune to Stun, Freeze, Sleep, Provoke, Block Active Skills, Block Passive Skills, Fear, True Fear, and Petrification, along with HP exchange effects, HP balancing, cooldown increases, and Turn Meter reduction.

Damage from skills that scale off enemy MAX HP is capped at 10% of that head’s MAX HP, one tick of HP Burn cannot exceed 20,000 HP, and reflected damage plus Warmaster or Giant Slayer procs cap at 50,000 per attack. Check below to see in detail what each head actually does.

Head of Torment

Head of Torment is built around Fear. Its basic attack can place Fear that cannot be blocked or resisted, and it follows up by attacking every enemy already under Fear or True Fear. Its passive punishes anyone attacking without a Perfect Veil buff by applying True Fear, and it cuts Poison damage taken by 90%. When decapitated, it clears all Fear effects from your team and grants Perfect Veil to 2 random Champions.

Head of Decay

Head of Decay attacks your lowest HP Champion and applies 100% Heal Reduction. Its most dangerous passive shrinks your Champions’ MAX HP by 15% of any heal they receive, stacking up to 75% of their MAX HP, which quietly ruins teams that lean hard on healing. It also places Life Barrier on the lowest HP head and can wipe debuffs off all heads while filling their Turn Meters.

Head of Blight

Head of Blight is the Poison specialist. It stacks multiple Poison debuffs plus Leech on your whole team, then detonates those Poisons early. Its Blinding Smog skill covers all heads in Poison Cloud. Importantly, this head takes double damage from HP Burn, making HP Burn your best answer to it.

Head of Suffering

Head of Suffering is the defensive anchor. It raises the Resistance of all heads by 50 and reduces AoE damage taken across all heads by 30%, which is the highest reduction of any head. It also applies Weaken that cannot be resisted, grants Ally Protection to the other heads, and links a Champion to itself with Pain Link.

Head of Mischief

Head of Mischief steals buffs and Turn Meter from whichever Champion has the most buffs. Its passive has a 75% chance to redirect your attacks onto a random different head, which makes focused damage unreliable unless you land a Hex debuff to shut that off. When decapitated, it fully empties the Turn Meters of every head.

Head of Wrath

Head of Wrath builds a Vengeance counter with every hit it takes. At 15 hits it gains Vengeance along with Block Debuffs and Reflect Damage, then immediately attacks your whole team for massively increased damage. Multi hit Champions fill this counter fast, so watch your hit count carefully against this head.

Hydra Clan Boss – The Devouring Mechanic Explained

This is the mechanic that catches new players out, and it can permanently cost you a Champion.

At the start of battle, one of your Champions receives the Mark of the Hydra with a 20 turn countdown. When that timer expires, the next head to act devours them. Mark of the Hydra is not technically a debuff, so it cannot be blocked, removed, or resisted, and Devouring ignores Taunt entirely.

Once devoured, that head begins digesting with a 5 turn countdown. You can rescue your Champion by dealing enough damage to the head holding them before the timer runs out. If you fail, they are consumed, and no revive or resurrection effect can bring them back for the rest of that fight.

The pressure escalates as the fight goes on. Each new mark shortens the devour countdown by 1 turn down to a minimum of 2, and each devour shortens the digestion countdown by 1 turn down to a minimum of 2. From the fifth devour onward, the Hydra also gains escalating bonus HP each time it digests a Champion, scaling with difficulty and continuing to grow for the rest of the battle.

Decapitation and Exposed Necks

Killing a head does not remove it from the fight. The head becomes an Exposed Neck with the Decapitated debuff, its own HP bar equal to two heads combined, and a crucial weakness: it takes 200% damage while decapitated. This is your single best damage window in the entire fight, so save your heaviest nukes for it.

After 2 turns, or immediately if you kill the Exposed Neck, a new head grows in its place. On lower difficulties the same head usually returns, but on higher difficulties there is a much greater chance a Substitute Head appears instead, which can change the whole shape of the fight mid battle.

Any freshly grown head gains Serpent’s Will, which reduces all incoming damage by 100% until that head takes a turn. Only one head gets Serpent’s Will if two grow on the same turn, and a maximum of 3 can be active at once. Do not waste big skills on a head under this buff.

Hydra Specific Buffs and Debuffs

The Hydra uses several effects found nowhere else in RAID, and none of them can be removed or stolen through normal buff manipulation.

  • Life Barrier acts like a Shield that takes priority over real Shield buffs. Fail to break it in time and that head fully restores its HP, but break it and the head is Stunned for 1 turn.
  • Poison Cloud blocks all Poison damage and turns every attack against that head into a Weak Hit. HP Burn cancels it, and the Affinitybreaker set or Champions whose skills specify hit type can work around it.
  • Vengeance activates on the Head of Wrath and massively amplifies its damage for 1 turn.
  • Pain Link sends 15% of all damage the Head of Suffering takes to a linked Champion. The head still takes full damage, so this is duplicated damage rather than redirected.
  • Decapitated marks an Exposed Neck, stopping it acting and making it take 200% damage.
  • Serpent’s Will protects a newly grown head from incoming damage until it acts.

Building the Best Hydra Teams

Because Champions lock for the week, the real skill is spreading your roster across three viable teams rather than perfecting one. Aim for teams that cover the same core roles, then adjust based on which heads are in rotation.

Survivability comes first. The fight rewards lasting many turns, and effects like Block Damage, Unkillable, and strong Shields keep your team going. Be careful with heal heavy teams if the Head of Decay is active, since its passive converts your healing into permanent MAX HP loss. Shields and damage mitigation are often safer than raw healing in those rotations.

Hydra Boss – Keys, Weekly Cycles, and Difficulties

You get 3 Hydra Keys per week, delivered every Wednesday between 08:00 and 13:00 UTC. The Hydra also resets in that same window, and the exact timing varies slightly by Clan.

There are 4 difficulties: Normal, Hard, Brutal, and Nightmare. Your Clan unlocks the next tier by fully depleting the Hydra’s HP on the current one, and once unlocked it stays unlocked permanently.

If the Hydra survives the week, contributing members each get one Hydra Chest based on personal damage. If the Clan kills it, everyone who contributed gets two chests instead.

Free Regroup is your best tool for experimenting. Pause mid battle and select Free Regroup to return to team selection without spending a Key, and your Champions will not lock either. You can also re-run a completed battle for free from the Result screen, choosing to either save your score or regroup and try again.

One important note if you change Clans. Leaving and joining a new Clan locks you out of the Hydra for 6 hours, and you can only claim Hydra rewards from one Clan, so switching mid cycle can cost you your chest entirely.

Damage Milestones for Hydra Chests

Chest rewards depend on total damage dealt across the week on a given difficulty. Falling below the minimum threshold means no chest at all, so pick a difficulty you can actually clear.

Difficulty Lowest Milestone Highest Milestone
Normal 1.67M for Novice Chest Over 6.66M for Warrior Chest
Hard 5.1M for Adept Chest Over 20.4M for Knight Chest
Brutal 7.35M for Warrior Chest Over 29.4M for Guardian Chest
Nightmare 9.15M for Knight Chest Over 36.6M for Grandmaster Chest

Tips to Beat Chimera Clan Boss Faster

  • Save your biggest damage for Exposed Necks, since they take 200% damage while decapitated.
  • Never waste skills on a head under Serpent’s Will, as damage is fully blocked until it acts.
  • Bring HP Burn to counter Poison Cloud and punish the Head of Blight for double damage.
  • Avoid stacking buffs on a single Champion when Mischief is in rotation.
  • Rethink heal heavy teams when the Head of Decay is active, since healing permanently reduces MAX HP.
  • Use Free Regroup to test freely, since it costs no Key and does not lock your Champions.
  • Build three separate teams from the start rather than trying to reuse your strongest Champions.
