Free Fire has been at the helm of competitive play ever since MCPS Major Season 6 was concluded. The game is soon gearing up for bigger and larger tournaments across Asia as announced in their latest dev report. Players around the globe are excited to try out the new content being thrown with the recent implementation of OB42 Update. The update can already be seen live in-game as it was done on 31st October, 2023. Free Fire is available to be downloaded and installed as a free-to-play game on both the Google Play Store and iOS App Store.

The new OB42 update brought a ton of new features such as economy changes in the battle royale game mode, new items, new mechanics, a novel character, and battlefield optimizations. As expected from a large patch, Garena seems to be revamping the way players have approached the Battle Royale game mode since a long time. Let’s get right into the nitty gritty of what’s new with the update. 

Battlefield Economy Adjustment for Battle Royale

A better FF coin system is being implemented so that you can bid adieu to the constant struggle of collecting them or fighting with others to get your hands on them. Here is the complete list of changes:

• Coin Machine is a brand-new FF Coin source that was unveiled in the update. It can be located using the mini-map and will be dispersed throughout the battlefield.
• Each member of your squad will receive 200 FF Coins as you interact with these Coin Machines. 
• The machine can be used by other teams but will stop yielding coins after it has produced FF coins.
• 100 FF Coins will be awarded to you when you defeat an opponent.
• 40% of your accumulated FF coins will be retained by you as you leave the match if you are eliminated.
• Your collected FF coins will be reduced upon being knocked down; upon being revived, you will possess only thirty percent of them.

OB42 Update: New Items

Active Skill Card

• The introduction of a new item called an Active Skill Card will result in the production of another active skill based on the character of the card.
• Active skill cards can only be used one time in the match, and for each character the limit remains same.
• Characters such as Clu, Chrono, Homer, Alok, Kenta, Steffie, A124, and Skyler, will have their skills displayed on the Active Skill Card.
• Characters whose active skill you already own will not have their active skill cards available for looting.

Portal Go

• Portal Go is going to be a new item that allows players to teleport to multiple locations in an instant with a single usage. Simply select the target location from the Portal Go menu.
• Both enemies and teammates will be allowed to use Portal Go.
• A shining beam of light will denote the opening and end of the portal.
• The Portals constructed with this item cannot be destroyed and will stay as an integral part of the map for the current match.
• A Portal 20 metres above players location cannot be constructed.

Energizer

• Energizer now has a two-second usage time and a ten-second effect duration.
• It will regain five HP/s, improving movement speed by 10% and accuracy by 5%.
• It is now possible to use energizers while running.

Mini Turret

• To attack the enemy, position the Mini Turret where it is needed. You can use up to two Mini Turrets at a time.
• When attacking, the Mini Turret will automatically mark its targets, aiding to their precision and usage. 
• The Mini Turret has 20 damage, a 0.5-second fire rate, a 30-meter attack range, and 200 horsepower.
• Their duration is twenty seconds. The Mini Turret will deactivate after five seconds if you move it more than thirty meters away from you. Additionally, they will automatically be destroyed after five seconds of inactivity.

Heal UAV-Lite

• Heal UAV-Lite is a great tool to provide healing for you and your allies.

• The device will continue flying in the direction it was initially launched towards.

• Healing rate: 20 HP/s, duration: 12 seconds, flight distance: 10m, healing radius: 5m, HP: 100.

Clash Squad Changes with Free Fire OB42 Update

A host of gameplay related changes are in store for Clash Squad enjoyers! Gamers can now experiment with different battle styles, each having significant amount of variety and progression differences. These styles provide a multitude of abilities to the player. Let’s check them out along with their abilities:

Megabolt

Level 1: Gives faster EP conversion when running.

Level 2: Get Tatsuya’s Active Skill Card

Level 3: Reveals nearby enemy location.

Level 4: Increases reload speed.

Demolitionist

Level 1: Gloo Wall detonation ability. Players will create a flash-freeze-like area after destroying Gloww Walls.

Level 2: Get Active Skill Card Skyler.

Level 3: Get Flash Freeze.

Level 4: Increases damage to Gloo Wall.

Warding Lord

Level 1: +35 HP.

Level 2: Get an Active Skill Card for Chrono.

Level 3: Produce a shield that blocks bullets after every 60 seconds.

Level 4: Get a level four vest

Here is some additional information regarding the new CS changes:

• Kills/Assists/Revives give you extra EXP. You can use this extra EXP to level up your skills and items. They can be upgraded to a maximum of Level 4.
• At level 4, the player will be at their strongest form. You can hear special sound effects upon entry, and when you eliminate enemies. Moreover, your abilities will also gain unique effects.
• Eliminating the Ultimate Warrior will trigger a special sound effect.
• Eliminating higher-tier players in this regard will reward extra CS cash.
• Equipping Tatsuya’s skill and choosing Megabolt will yield Alok’s Skill Card.
• Equip Skyler’s skill and choose Demolitionist to receive Homer’s Skill Card.
• Equipping Chrono’s skill and choosing Warding Lord will yield Steffie’s Skill Card.

Free Fire OB42 Update: Game Mode Optimizations

Here are some core optimizations that were added to some of the more popular game modes:

Zombie Invasion Optimization

• Players can now equip two active skills.
• Players’ level cap increased to 15.
• Added Arsenal and BR War Chest.
• Removed Airstrike. The Safe Zone shrink rate has been changed

Triple Wolves Optimization

• Optimize and improve matchmaking fairness. Now, players can play more often against enemies with the same skills.
• Changed weapon store. Wide variety of weapons to choose from.
• The default matchmaking mode to Duo has been optimized.

New Character Ignis Enters with Free Fire OB42 Update

Ignis is the newest character to join the fray of warriors in Free Fire. His special ability Flame Mirage creates a giant firewall 19 metres fall, and that lasts for 8 seconds upon being activated. Enemies and Gloo Walls both hit by this firewall will take a significant amount of damage in the form of Burns. This continuous damage will last for 2 seconds. The Gloo Wall’s HP will be reduced by 200 per second.
