Damasi is basically Turkish checkers, which works a bit differently than the stuff people might be used to. The board is still 8×8, but each side starts out with 16 pieces, lined up in two rows and skipping the very back row. The whole game feels a lot about trying to get into the right spot, since the regular pieces only move forward or to the side — never backward. To capture, you have to jump someone, and the piece you jump gets taken off right away. Making a move backward only comes into play for kings, and those are earned when a piece finally reaches the opponent’s back row.
Once you get a king, you get all sorts of freedom — it can slide any number of spaces in any direction, making it a serious threat. But you always have to capture if you can, and if there are a few ways to capture, you’ve got to pick the one that grabs the most pieces all at once. They’re strict about that. For capturing chains, you can’t just wiggle back and forth across the same two spots; you’re not allowed to double back with a 180 between captures.
There’s online multiplayer with chat, so you can play against people and talk a bit while you think, but you can also just play against the computer or someone sitting next to you. There’s even a way to set up your own board positions if you want to practice weird scenarios or see how different situations play out. The game saves progress so you don’t lose where you left off. The look is pretty old-school with a wooden style, which feels classic and simple. Playing on PC with BlueStacks works smoothly, and is actually a nice way to not be stuck on a phone screen the whole time. It’s the kind of game that’s easy to pick up but really pushes you to think — especially as you learn all the differences from American checkers or other versions.
