Aniimo Beginners Gameplay Guide How to Start Your Journey in Idyll

Aniimo is a free-to-play open-world creature-catching RPG from Pawprint Studio, set on the continent of Idyll. You join a Polaris Institute research expedition as a special observer, catch creatures called Aniimo, command them in the field, and twine with them to take direct control of their skills. This beginner gameplay guide covers the opening hours of the game, from character creation and your first catch to choosing a guardian, reading Aniimo cards, and understanding elements and battle roles.
Understand the Setting and Your Goal
Aniimo opens with a Polaris Institute Live TV broadcast covering the Aniimo Discovery Tour, with your character introduced as the special observer from the Polaris Institute Expedition team. Your first stop is Starfall Valley, an area Nicole, your guide, describes as a mix of water pools, grassland, and giant trees that is home to at least three Aniimo families.
The expedition is studying a phenomenon called the Prismana Flow. According to Nicole, Aniimo exposed to Prismana can transform, yet no one knows where Prismana comes from or how Aniimo first appeared in the world. Nicole explains that the Institute researches every aspect of Idyll, from its history and legends to how Aniimo came to be. She also mentions Polaris Badges, which are awarded for major research breakthroughs, along with easier badges such as the Stargazer Badge she earned by observing Celestises.

Pick Your Server and Create Your Character
The title screen shows your selected server above the Start Adventure button. Aniimo runs separate America, Europe, and APAC servers, and progress linked through an Aniimo Pass account is only shared on the same regional server. Pick the server closest to you and the one your friends play on before you start, because data does not transfer between regions.
Character creation begins with a choice between two base appearances. The Face Shape screen then offers a grid of preset faces and a Face Blend dial, while the Customize button opens a detailed editor with Face, Makeup, Hair, and Body Type tabs. Inside the Face tab, you can adjust areas such as cheekbones, cheeks, chin, and jawline using width, length, and size sliders. The Clothing and Emote tabs let you pick a starting outfit, such as Cute Flame Whisper, and an emote, such as Graceful.
You can edit your look later through the in-game Appearance menu, although larger reshapes cost special items such as a Reshape Card or Hair Salon Card. It is still worth taking a few minutes here so you start with a character you like.

Catch Your First Aniimo
Your first catch is an Emberpup, found asleep in the grass during the opening quest, An Idyllic Trip. Aniimo you have not met before can appear with a “???” name and a New tag, and the tutorial first asks you to photograph the Emberpup with the interaction button. Nicole then tells you to take out an Aniipod, the device used to catch Aniimo. Once you’re past the tutorial, check out this Aniimo Starter Guide for the best early Aniimo to chase.
Tapping the Catch button enters Catch Mode. You aim the crosshair at the target and press the Throw button to throw an Aniipod. While you aim, the game displays your current catch chance as a percentage, along with any conditions modifying it. Each throw uses one Aniipod, so line up your shot before throwing. Because the Emberpup is asleep, the tutorial throw is marked Guaranteed Success, which makes it a good moment to see how the modifiers stack.
| Condition Shown In-Game | Catch Modifier | How to Use It |
| Sleeping | x2 | Approach Aniimo that are asleep and throw before they wake |
| Backstab | x1.5 | Circle behind the target and throw from its rear |
| On edge | x0.9 | Slow down or wait, since an alert Aniimo is harder to catch |
Weakening an Aniimo in battle also improves your odds, and stronger pods help with difficult targets. Aniipods come in several tiers, including the standard Aniipod, Aniipod Pro, Aniipod Mega, and Aniipod Ultra, with higher tiers offering better catch chances. Save the higher tiers for Aniimo you actually plan to use. Where and when you search also matters, since certain Aniimo only appear in specific environments, weather, or times of day. If you’re hunting a specific Aniimo and don’t want to wander blindly, check out this guide on finding any Aniimo fast using the in-game map.

Read the Aniimo Card After Every Catch
Each successful catch shows a card that summarizes the new Aniimo. The card lists its index number, its form, its stage, an element icon, a battle role, and a field ability. These details tell you at a glance what each Aniimo is good for, both in combat and while exploring.
In Starfall Valley, Nicole asks you to catch one of each Aniimo type in the area, and these three complete that task. Forms matter as well. Hummin appears in both a Basic Form and a Mountain Form under the same index number, and each has its own description, so it is worth catching variants when you see them. Nicole also warns that Hummin are shy and dig into the ground if startled, which is a useful reminder to approach Aniimo carefully. Celestis is worth a special look too, since Celestises are said to bring good luck for life to anyone who spots one.

Use Command Mode and Twining
Aniimo gives you two ways to work with your creatures. In Command Mode, you stay in control of your character and direct your Aniimo. The tutorial explains that when you command an Aniimo to move, it uses its unique abilities, such as igniting vines or generating an ice wall to clear obstacles. The tutorial card that explains this is titled Command Mode – Act. Early on, you press the Attack button to command your Emberpup to burn the vines blocking the path into Starfall Valley, since its Fire-type ability is suited to that obstacle.
Twining goes a step further. When you twine, you become one of your collected Aniimo and control it directly, using its skills for combat, traversal, and puzzles. The game introduces twining during a boss fight in the Mysterious Cavern, and once it works, you control your guardian Aniimo with skills such as Damage Boost and Pound. Twining also matters outside battle, since speaking with some wild Aniimo requires being twined with a creature from the same evolution family. Idyll can be explored by gliding, diving, and burrowing, so keep an eye on field abilities such as Fly, Swim, and Dig In when deciding which Aniimo to keep.

Choose Your Guardian: Helion or Lunara
After a strange cube, later named the twenty-sided Ancestor Prism, swallows BINI #9, you end up in the Mysterious Cavern. Inside, you meet two Aniimo that can talk. Helion is the embodiment of Sol, courage, and light, while Lunara represents Lun and embodies harmony and wisdom. They explain that humans can only choose one blessing at a time. Helion promises that his blessing will make you even more fearless, while Lunara says hers will help sharpen your thinking, and the game then asks which one you want as your guardian.
Both are Light Aniimo with identical starting stats, so the decision comes down to playstyle. Helion is adept at close combat and strikes targets in a small area with impressive burst potential. Lunara is skilled in ranged area attacks and has high recovery that supports sustained combat. Pick Helion if you prefer getting up close and dealing damage quickly, and pick Lunara if you prefer fighting from range and outlasting enemies.
This choice is permanent, and you cannot obtain the other guardian later, so choose the playstyle you are most comfortable with rather than the one you think is stronger.

Learn Elements and Battle Roles
Aniimo uses nine elements: Fire, Water, Grass, Lightning, Ice, Earth, Wind, Light, and Dark. Hitting an enemy with an element it is weak to shows a Super Effective tag on the damage numbers and deals 1.6 times the normal damage, while resisted hits deal 0.625 times the normal damage. Boss health bars also show the enemy’s element icon, so check it before a fight. Light, the element of both guardians, is strong against Wind and Dark, which is worth remembering during the early story.
| Element | Strong Against |
| Fire | Grass, Ice |
| Water | Fire, Earth |
| Grass | Water, Earth |
| Lightning | Water, Wind |
| Ice | Water, Lightning |
| Earth | Fire, Ice |
| Wind | Grass, Dark |
| Light | Wind, Dark |
| Dark | Grass, Lightning, Light |
Roles shape how each Aniimo contributes in battle. There are five battle roles:
- DPS: The main damage dealers that carry most of a team’s damage output.
- Break: Wears down an enemy’s guard to stagger it and create an opening for damage.
- Support: Buffs allies and weakens enemies instead of dealing the finishing blows.
- Heal: Keeps the team alive with direct recovery skills.
- Regen: Restores the energy that skills draw from, keeping skill rotations going in longer fights.
Aim to cover at least two elements early so a single resistant enemy cannot wall your whole team.

What to Focus On After the Opening
Once the cavern events are over, you arrive at the Polaris Institute and meet Principal Oswen, who is interested in the ancient murals and talking Aniimo you found in the sub-Idyllian ruins. From here, the game opens up into its wider systems. Most Aniimo can evolve, the Homeland lets each Pathfinder plant crops and build decorations in a personal space, and Egg Heist is a three-player PvEvP mode built around real-time searches and battles in the Lost Isles. Multiplayer works across platforms, so friends on PC, consoles, and mobile can group up as long as they share a regional server.
A few habits will help your account grow steadily during the first days:
- Follow the Main Story and Quest Log, since they introduce core systems and provide experience and resources.
- Catch new species whenever you can to gain experience and fill out your collection.
- Start the Homeland quests as soon as the story allows, so resource production begins early.
- Check element matchups before boss fights and bring an Aniimo that deals Super Effective damage.

Aniimo’s opening hours teach you its most important systems in quick succession. Pick your server and character carefully, use sleeping and backstab bonuses to land easy catches, read each Aniimo card to understand roles and field abilities, and choose the guardian whose playstyle suits you, since that decision is permanent. With Command Mode, twining, and element matchups in hand, you will be well prepared for everything Idyll has to offer.
