Guild Wars Reforged Beginner's Guide: Everything You Need to Know to Start Your Adventure

Guild Wars Reforged is coming to mobile platforms: you’ll now be able to play this MMORPG (which PC players have been enjoying for over 20 years) on smartphones and tablets. And if you choose BlueStacks, you’ll be able to play it on your PC or laptop for a much more enjoyable and seamless experience. However, this is a game with many unique mechanics and can be a bit confusing for newcomers. That’s why we’ve prepared this beginner’s guide: below, you’ll find everything new players need to know about Guild Wars Reforged!
| IMPORTANT | At the time this guide was written, the game was still in the testing phase, and some content may change by the time it is released. |
Campaigns and Expansions: Where Should You Start?
Guild Wars Reforged is a game that has received numerous updates over the past 20 years, and we can divide these into two categories: campaigns and expansions. Technically, you can think of campaigns as lengthy storylines added to the base game, and expansions as even longer storylines that offer additional content. Here’s a list:
- Prophecies (campaign)
- Factions (campaign)
- Nightfall (campaign)
- Eye of the North (expansion)
“Prophecies” represents the free-to-play limit: if you want to try the other campaigns and expansions, you’ll need to purchase them. We recommend doing so because they truly enhance the game, and we’ve prepared this guide assuming you have access to all the content.

You can start with any campaign or expansion. However, the recommended order is to start with Nightfall, switch to Eye of the North once you reach level 10 to unlock the Outpost, and then continue in the order Nightfall – Factions – Prophecies. Once you’ve finished all of them, you can continue with Eye of the North. In other words, finish the campaigns first, then continue with the expansion.
The order you choose will primarily affect two things: cosmetic options (faces, hairstyles, gear appearance) and character classes. The reason for making a brief detour to Eye of the North at the start is precisely this: it allows you to obtain two hero classes, Monk and Mesmer. The order we recommend will allow you to get powerful heroes right at the start of your adventure.
| HOW TO SWITCH FROM ONE CAMPAIGN TO ANOTHER? | You can switch from one campaign to another at any time, but you’ll need to complete a quest to do so (usually, simply speaking to an NPC is enough, but keep in mind that each campaign may have a level requirement). While the quest is active, open your map and click on the boat icon for the campaign you want to go to. |
Quest System: Primary and Secondary
You can think of primary quests as the main story and secondary quests as side stories. Focus on completing primary quests, as they will help you progress through the story and unlock new mechanics. However, don’t neglect secondary quests, as they will allow you to level up much faster.

Henchmen and Heroes: What Are They and What’s the Difference?
Guild Wars Reforged is a bit different from the MMORPGs you’re used to. You’ll only see other players in towns and outposts. When you venture into the open world (that is, while completing your quests) you’re playing solo. However, that doesn’t mean you’re on your own: you can assemble a team of NPC companions (minimum 4, maximum 8 members).
| CAN I FORM A TEAM WITH OTHER PLAYERS? | Yes, but you must do this in towns or outposts. At these locations, you can interact with other players to form a team and venture out into the open world together. |
Your NPC party can consist of two types of units: regular henchmen and heroes. You can find henchmen at almost all outposts or towns: if you see 10 NPCs standing side by side, you’re most likely looking at a group of henchmen. They can take on different roles (fighter, mage, etc.), but their power has a certain limit: as you approach the end of the game, they become insufficient.
For this reason, and as early as possible, you should try to assemble a team of heroes. Heroes are also NPC companions, but they can take on specific roles like monk, mesmer, or elementalist, and most importantly, you can customize their gear and skills. You don’t have this kind of control over henchmen, but you can customize heroes however you like.

Finding heroes is a bit more challenging: some join your team after you complete primary quests, while others require you to complete specific tasks. For example, as mentioned earlier; by activating the Eye of the North outpost at the start of the game, you’ll be able to add a Monk and a Mesmer to your team.
| RECOMMENDED TEAM COMPOSITION | Every battle scenario will require a different formation, but in most cases, it’s best to build a team centered around monks, mesmers, and fighters. For example, a team consisting of 3 monks, 3 mesmers, and 2 fighters will serve you well for a long time. |
Upgrading Skills: Points and Trainers
Once you’ve assembled your hero team, you can start upgrading their skills. It’s crucial to do this regularly and consistently; otherwise, you’ll reach a point where you can’t progress any further: enemies will become much stronger than you. In Guild Wars Reforged, there are two main mechanics you can use for skill upgrades:
- Skill Points: As you gain ranks in a specific skill, you earn skill points. You can use these points to purchase new skills from skill trainers in towns and outposts. This requires in-game currencies such as gold and platinum.
- Signet of Capture: After defeating an enemy, go near them and use this signet: by doing that, you can add one of their skills to your own. These types of skills are not available from trainers and are often the most powerful skills in the game.

Choose the campaign you want to start, assemble your team, and upgrade your skills to enjoy every adventure this vast world has to offer: Guild Wars Reforged provides enough content to keep you entertained for months. As always, we recommend playing Guild Wars Reforged on your PC with BlueStacks for a more enjoyable and seamless experience!
