Dead Rails is a post-apocalyptic survival-adventure game on Roblox where players travel across a plague-ravaged world onboard a steam locomotive. Created by RCM Games, it combines resource management, combat, and strategy as you journey 80 km to Mexico against waves of undead, outlaws, and supernatural threats. This beginner-oriented guide will explain in detail the core mechanics of the game and some tips to progress faster.

Starting Out in Dead Rails

Upon spawning in Fortified Town, players receive a gold bar to sell at the Trading Post, netting initial funds (~$50). You’ll also be equipped with a sack to carry items. Use it efficiently (valuables first, fuel last) and grab extra items like newspapers, which double as improvised armor. In the General Store, spend wisely based on your play style:

Fuel-heavy approach: Buy 3 units of coal for a safe start.

Combat/Early loot: Purchase a revolver (and ammo) to engage early enemies and earn bounties.

Use Fortified Towns as Pitstops

Towns appear every 10 km with key facilities:

  • Trading Post—sell valuables and bounties.
  • General Store—buy coal and supplies.
  • Gunsmith—purchase weapons and ammo.
  • Doctor—stock up on healing items.
  • Sheriff—cash in outlaws for bounty

These zones are ideal for restocking and fortifying. Use weldable resources such as newspapers or metal sheets to barricade train entrances, ramps, and windows. This fortification is crucial for surviving night raids outside the safe zone.

Train Management

Your train is both tank and sanctuary. Fuel it with coal, corpses, or scrap found in buildings. Early on, rely on coal purchased in forts. As you travel, use spare corpses from zombies or werewolves—each provides a small fuel boost. Barricading entry points with newspapers (early game) or metal sheets (later game) prevents creature intrusion, especially during night when vampires, werewolves, and hordes descend.

Facing Enemies and Structures

Enemies include zombies, wolves, outlaws, vampires, and werewolves. Use ranged weapons aggressively to thin crowds or pick off bandits and outlaws. Outlaws ride horses and can be turned in for bounties at forts. When entering towns, ensure team coordination. Use the train’s turret, rideable horses for flanking, and strategic positioning. Turret-users are invaluable during estate assaults and boss fights.

Between safe zones, you’ll encounter structures with loot and hazards. Engage enemies only when you’re adequately armed as guns are key to handling outlaws. Zombies are manageable with melee early, but guns help later. Be mindful of enemy density, especially in towns.

Survival Tactics During Night Time

In Dead Rails, the night time brings more dread for players and not relief. Your enemies do not want to rest, instead a new vampire type of enemies can be seen on red-moon nights. Make sure to kill off these vampires as they are well worth the risk. Vampire bounties can fetch you tons of gold. Also, during the nighttime, the zombies awaken. Keep shooting away at them, or they might overpower you. If there are vampires outside, ensure that your train is barricaded, as they can quite literally teleport right next to you.

Mid-Game Strategies

Between 20–40 km, upgrade to rifles or shotguns as they are more reliable choices for hunting tougher bands. Aggressive players should invest in classes like Survivalist (great PvE), Cowboy or Pony Express for early combat, or High Roller to earn extra bonds via loot.

Rewards

Completing the 80 km journey and defeating boss Nikola Tesla grants a win, star rating, and bonds (currency). Bonds unlock character classes and train upgrades. You can replay to improve gear gains and loot strategy.
