Among Us just got a major shakeup with the v17.0.0 update. Two new roles join the roster, in the form of the Detective and Viper, bringing fresh mechanics and strategic depth to Crewmates and Impostors, respectively. Along with them come quality‑of‑life improvements to role selection, role guides, and Practice Mode. If you’ve been playing Among Us for a while—or coming back after a break—this update gives you a lot of new tools (and mischief) to explore.

Let’s dive in!

Detective Role: Crewmates’ New Investigator

The Detective is the newest Crewmate role and the first to offer dual abilities that let you dig deeper into the mystery. With Notes, you can record details after someone reports a dead body, such as where the body was found, who you suspect, and what type of impostor you believe may be involved. Your notes are tied to actual case files that persist as long as the bodies remain relevant.

Take out your notebooks and try to deduce who’s the killer as the new Detective role in Among Us!

Then there’s Interrogate. After a body is reported, Detective players can question other Crewmates about their location at the time of the kill. This ability lets you pull in suspect info, cross-check alibis, and gather evidence. Only one case can be actively interrogated at a time, and you can adjust how many interrogations a Detective is allowed via advanced role settings in the lobby. All in all, Detective makes discussion rounds and Emergency Meetings more meaningful and gives Crewmates a structured way to chase down Impostors—not just by chance, but by clue gathering.

Viper Role: Stealth & Decay for Impostors

On the Impostor side, the Viper introduces a dark twist: Acid replaces the standard kill button. When Viper kills a Crewmate, their body decays through three stages (slightly dissolved, very dissolved, down to a single bone), and eventually disappears entirely. The speed of this dissolve is adjustable in the advanced role settings. This type of impostor, when used correctly, becomes a powerful tool for cover‑ups. After all, fewer bodies means fewer reports, which in turn devolves into more confusion.

Remove the evidence of your crimes with the Viper’s acid ability!

To maximize Viper effectiveness, use distractions like Sabotage to delay crew discovery after a kill, time your kills in low‑traffic areas, and keep an eye on settings so the decay is slow enough for distance but fast enough so bodies vanish before Crewmates stumble on them.

Role Settings, Practice Mode & UI Improvements

Alongside the new roles, Among Us v17.0.0 improves how roles are selected, practiced, and learned. The game updated the How to Play guide to better accommodate all nine roles, making information easier to find and understand. Role settings now have a scrollable menu in the lobby, with older roles on the left and newer ones to the right—so discovering Detective and Viper feels intuitive rather than crowded.

Practice Mode has also been made more flexible: you can now open Crewmate or Impostor folders to switch roles more smoothly, making it easier to try out the new mechanics before you hit a live match. These UI and learning upgrades help players adjust to the new dynamics without being overwhelmed.

In Among Us update 17.0.0, learning everything about the roles is as easy as it’s ever been!

Update 17.0.0 marks one of Among Us’s more substantial role additions in recent memory. Detective gives Crewmates tools to investigate more actively; Viper gives Impostors a stealth route to eliminate evidence. Combined with improved settings, guides, and practice options, the update balances action and clarity.

If you want to get the most out of this update, playing Among Us on PC with BlueStacks remains one of the best ways. Between better visuals, smoother input, and control flexibility, it helps you master Detective’s investigation or Viper’s disappearance tricks more reliably.
