Last Fiefdom Beginner's Guide

Last Fiefdom is a real-time strategy game where you build a fortified city, recruit and train troops, and lead your armies into battle against barbarians and rival lords. Your progression depends on managing resources, upgrading buildings, training the right unit types, and deploying heroes effectively. This guide covers the core systems so your first sessions are productive rather than frustrating.
Understand the Core Gameplay Loop
Last Fiefdom follows a repeating cycle: build and upgrade structures in your city, gather resources, train troops, send them into combat, and heal survivors before the next engagement. Every building you upgrade and every troop you train feeds back into your ability to fight harder content and unlock new features. Combat is guided through a tutorial that introduces the drag-based movement system, where you select units and drag them toward enemy forces to initiate movement. Once armies make contact, fighting proceeds automatically, though your hero assignments and troop composition still influence the outcome.

Follow Chapter Missions First
Chapter missions are your primary source of early rewards and progression guidance. Chapter I: Rise from the Ashes walks you through objectives such as building the Stronghold, constructing the Gate, healing troops, and rescuing refugees. Each completed objective provides speed-ups, currency, and upgrade materials. Clear chapter missions before focusing on any other activity during your first days, and use the Claim All button as soon as objectives are completed to unlock the next phase.

Prioritize the Stronghold and Train a Balanced Army
The Stronghold is the central building of your city and the highest priority structure to upgrade. Its level determines which features you can access, and advancing it requires certain prerequisite buildings such as the Stable to reach specific levels first. Each upgrade also adds a meaningful amount to your overall power rating. Stronghold timers are short early on, so timed upgrades are the practical choice rather than spending premium currency on instant finishes.
Last Fiefdom has distinct troop types trained from dedicated military buildings. Pikemen are trained at the Barracks and perform strongly against light cavalry. Shortbowmen are trained at the Range and can directly target enemy cavalry. Fielding a combination of both is more effective than filling your army with a single unit type. Set training queues before logging out so troops accumulate while you are away, and keep an eye on Hospital capacity so injured units are recovered regularly.

Assign Heroes to the Correct Troop Type and Keep the Hospital Active
Each hero provides passive stat bonuses and an active ability, but bonuses only apply to a specific troop type. The formation screen allows one hero per troop slot. Lady Isobel is a Rare hero who provides a cavalry attack bonus and uses Valor Strike. Vortimer, also Rare, buffs bowmen attack with Scorching Volley. Sloane is an Epic hero with stronger bowmen attack scaling and Ground Slam. Matching each hero to their correct troop type is essential. Mismatching wastes the passive entirely. The formation screen also shows your power versus the recommended level, which is a reliable guide before committing to a fight.
Troops defeated in battle are sent to the Hospital as injured units rather than lost permanently. They remain unavailable until healed, which requires Food and Wood. The Hospital has a capacity limit, so large battles can fill it quickly. Check the Hospital after every battle and queue healing whenever resources allow. Instant healing using premium currency is available but is best reserved for urgent situations such as incoming timed events.

Engage Barbarian Attack Events and Grow Your City Population
Barbarian attack events are wave-based encounters that appear periodically and reward participation regardless of performance. Before challenging one, review the formation screen and confirm heroes are correctly assigned and your troop count is healthy. If your power falls short of the recommended level, use the countdown time to heal troops or complete an upgrade currently in progress.
As your city develops, new residents arrive and join your settlement. Population growth is tied to city progression and reflected in the game’s narrative through dialogue about refugees seeking safety. Each batch of new residents can be assigned as workforce or deployed in other roles depending on which features are unlocked. Continuing to develop your city is the main driver of population expansion.

Last Fiefdom rewards players who build methodically, keep armies healthy, and match heroes to the right troop types. By following chapter missions, maintaining an active Hospital queue, upgrading the Stronghold consistently, and checking the formation screen before battles, you will build a strong foundation for the game’s more advanced systems.
